I saw this thing in the Telegraph Motoring section (Honest John's column) on a Saturday before Easter where someone had been complaining that their diesel car was drinking oil. One man claimed success on his BMW 330d which was costing him 14 litres of oil (around £140) between services, with the solution of "thrashing the living daylights out of it". He claimed no damage was done and it settled down to around 1 litre per year in the subsequent 4 years.

Thanks for the email. Fortunately my car doesn't use that much oil and I
don't like the idea of deliberately driving it hard just to speed up the
running in process. It'll run in when it's ready.
