Mk 5 airconditioning fan noise

Hi Stuart, Just came across your site through the UK MKivs forum. I was searching for 'Mk 5 airconditioning fan noise' problems and came across a post you made back in Jun 2010.

I have a Mk5 2.0 FSI and am having a loud fan noise from the front. It turns on and off. A/C is still cold, maybe not as good as it used to be. The fan also continues running for about 30-60secs after engine shutdown. A few days ago my A/C would not get cold at all. I left the car for a few days and tried again yesterday and it seems to be cold again, although the fan noise is still there. I was wondering whether it could be a sign of a service reqd and regas like you did, or could it be the fan is on its way? Mind you, it has been 40 degrees c here in Sydney everyday for the past week!

I was wondering if the airconditioning service you did fixed the problem? I had a look at your site but you didn't mention whether it fixed the fan noise problem.

If you could please let me know how you fixed the fan noise problem that would be great.

Cheers

Regards,
Jordan

Hi Stuart,

Thanks for the reply. I've read a few more threads on VW Vortex forums and guys were talking about their fans failing.

Theres two on the Golf, a larger one on the left side of the engine bay and a smaller (radiator fan?) on the right side.

It's the larger one on the left that only turns on when I turn the A/C on, it starts to spin up then goes full blast and makes the loud noise. If I turn the A/C off, the fan stops completely.
I also noticed the smaller one is not turning at all - this one could be faulty? - Do you know if the radiatior fan turns on all the time or only when its hot?

From what I read on the other forums, people said if one fan fails, the other could be picking up the slack, so the larger fan might be spinning faster.
Sounds like an expensive job to get the fan replaced. Already spent so much on the Golf.

I love the VW's but the quality just doesn't seem to be there for such an expensive car.

Thanks for your advice buddy. Really appreciate it. Helps to speak to other 'consumers' about our related problems rather than dealers who are mostly in it for the $$.

Cheers

Hi Jordan,

It does sound like you are having the same problems as I had.

I think the re-gas did fix the problem in my car although the hot days of summer are long behind us here. I certainly don't have any fan noise at the moment.

I'd recommend you get your car re-gassed if it's not been done for the last couple of years. It's not expensive. I guess if you ignore it, you might one day have to replace a worn out fan!

Hope that helps. Let me know how you get on.

Hi Jordan,

I also remember reading about problems with fans and possibly one fan failing. However, I thought this was on Mk IVs rather than Mk Vs but I could be mistaken.

It does sounds right however that there's a small fan for normal radiator cooling and a larger one for the A/C. I don't normally hear any fans from my car. I've never really looked closely. I'll try to remember to take a look the next time I'm out. My guess is that neither fan run continuously but are controlled to only come on when required.

Sorry you're having an expensive time with your Golf. Let me know if you have any further problems and I'll try to help.

Stuart
