Rear hatch wiring problem
Posted by private, Sun 7 Apr 2013 12:02 am
Hi Stuart, I've just found the solution to my 2 day old problem with my 9 year old mark 5 - boot lid won't open, rear wiper won't work, messages alerting me to failure of fog & reverse light.... Sounds like the wiring problem you had! It's not been confirmed yet as I haven't had it checked out but thanks to your website, I'm 100% confident I have my answer. But I'm not so confident about getting it fixed. As you say, sounds like a major flaw on VW's part & I don't expect my local VW dealer to admit this for one second. I have a wonderful independent VW mechanic & as it happens the car's MOT is due this week so I will get his view on things & what he suggests. I too don't feel that I should have to pay a penny for repairs but somehow I don't think I'll be so lucky. I may contact VW for the hell of it & see what response I get (will be interesting to see how they treat a woman - will report back!). Thanks so much for your help, just what I was looking for. Will be in touch.

Hi Claire,
Glad to hear you found my article useful. I'm sorry another person has this problem which Volkswagen deny is anything more than normal wear and tear. Hopefully your mechanic will be able to repair it. I do recommend you do contact VW. The more people who complain, the more chance they may realise this is not normal.
Thanks for letting me know and please let me know how you get on,
Stuart

Hi Stuart
I'll speak to my mechanic in a few days but no matter what he says, I'll contact VW as well. My mechanic used to be the service manager at my local dealer & now works for a VW specialist. If he can, he repairs my car in his spare time to keep costs down so here's hoping that's what he'll do. I'm in no hurry to get it done but it won't pass the MOT in its current state!
I have a lot of expenses to pay out for at the moment so my car going wrong has added to all the stress! I love VW's & have had 4. My first car was a mark 1, then I had a mark 4 in 1999 that I had for 7 years, then another mark 4 that I had for 3 years & now my mark 5 that I've had since September 2011. I always have pretty major problems with cars that I own, always have & always will. So the wiring loom won't put me off Golfs going forward. I've already had a new clutch & battery on the 5, plus flat tyres, & a couple of months ago a nice person caused damage to it when it was parked somewhere, about £350 to repair which I can't afford. But it may mean that I need a new headlight cluster - dread to think how much that will cost? The headlights also need either new levelling arms and/or sensors. They're gas filled xenons & they've been broken for a while now. It's never ending!! But I still love my Golf after everything it puts me through...
I'll be in touch.
