My Golf Mk5 tailgate latch would not release electrically using the VW disc. The problem was due to a broken wire in the harness where it passes through the rubber bellows between the tailgate and the main car body. There were a further four wires with cracked insulation and near to fracture too.
I am very disappointed the VW use such rubbish wire in their cars.
I repaired the wire and the problem went away.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I think there are a lot of disappointed VW car owners who have experienced issues such as this. Glad to hear you got your car's problem fixed.

Glad to share my grief!.
I have discovered that you can get a repair kit for the tailgate harness, so
VW obviously know there is a quality problem.
Pretty cynical I think.
