Blown fuse has caused no end of problems!

Hi stuart ,
Firstly may I say thank you for a fantastic site which as saved me £££ in repairs on my mk v golf . I was hoping you may have some advice for me with a fault I am experiencing. A 5p piece fell into the cigarette lighter and as a result blown the fuse and discharged the battery . On jump starting it a yellow power steering light came on but the car drove ok . Today I swapped the cigarette lighter fuse and to make sure changed the power steering fuse . On starting the car 3 warning beeps were heard and the car would not start quickly draining the battery. I have tried to jump start with a larger engine but the car would not start . When starting the car the warning light goes red to yellow to red . I have disconnected the battery for a couple of hours but again when trying to start no luck. Do you have any suggestions ? Thank you for your time . Phil

Hi Phil,
Thanks for your enquiry. I'm pleased to hear that you found my website useful.
You describe a number of problems with your car which confuse me. A 5p falling into the cigarette lighter should only cause the fuse to blow, not drain the battery. I have heard of the yellow power steering light coming on after the battery has been disconnected. This usually indicates that the steering control unit just needs calibrating and usually goes out after driving the car for a little while.
I guess the 5p falling in the cigarette lighter could have confused one or more control units but really I think you need to get the car's fault codes read. I think they would tell you exactly what the problem is.
Sorry I can't be more help. Hope you get it sorted. Please let me know how you get on,
Stuart

Hi stuart ,
Just to update you - sorry for the late reply - it seems the shortage raised a number of faults with the cpu which affected the recalibration of the steering - a pre existing fault with an abs sensor was discovered once this sensor was replaced the steering was able to be recalibrated and the fault fixed .
Thanks for your help
Phil
