My ID.3

My ID.3
On April 28, 2025 I acquired a 72 reg, 2023 model year Volkswagen ID.3 Pro (107 kW/143 bhp) in Family trim and Manganese Gray metallic paint. I bought this electric vehicle (EV) from a car supermarket. I'm the second owner and the car had covered 58,500 miles.
I was very happy with my previous car, a Volkswagen GTE plug-in hybrid. However, I really liked driving around on electric power and after 7½ years, my GTE couldn't do this for more than about 15 miles max.
My ID.3 has the medium size 62 kWh / 58 kWh usable battery. So far, I have only ever charged it to 80% SOC (state of charge) when it indicates around 200 miles of range. However, I have always been quite a relaxed driver and also, trying to eek out the most out of my GTE's small battery made me even more so. Therefore, I often average around 4.5 miles/kWh and once averaged 6 miles/kWh. That was during a leasurily cruise along country roads at around 40-50mph. At 70mph on a motorway I think I get around 4 miles/kWh. I'll have a better idea of efficiency and range after I've had it longer.
I really like the car. It feels so modern, it's full of tech (which I like), it's so big inside (my rear passengers have so much leg room and the boot is back to "normal Golf" size - not the smaller GTE size. And I'm expecting it to be cheap to own with only a ¼ of the fuel costs and ½ the maintainance costs of my previous cars.
The ID.3 in the UK is a well-specced car, even in the base Life trim. However, the Family trim includes a number of nice features:
- "East Derry" black, diamond cut 18" alloy wheels - I hate the steel wheels with trims found on many ID.3s.
- IQ Light/Matrix LED headlights with dynamic curve lighting
- Panaramic glass sunroof
- Keyless entry
- Door puddle lights and illuminated door handles
- Rear-view camera

Updated "Style" seats with a stitch design.
My ID.3 was registered at the very end of December 2022 and is a 2023 model year car. The ID.3 had a facelift in 2023, the most noticable changes being the removal of the black plastic at the top of the bonnet near the windscreen (I wasn't a big fan of this and it was one of the reasons why I chose this car with dark grey, almost black paintwork) and a revised front bumper design. Whilst my car is not a facelifted car, it does have a couple of features which I don't think were standard on earlier cars. These being:
- Stitch design on seats
- Park Assist Plus
The car can park itself!

Park Assist Plus as opposed to just Park Assist.
No real compromises from my previous car. However, there's one thing I've noticed which the ID.3 doesn't do quite as well as the GTE. When the adaptive cruise control brings the car to a complete stop, sometimes, not always, the final braking to a stop is a bit too sudden. My GTE always used to bring me to a nice, soft stop. I appreciated that. I'll see if I can fix this and will report back.
My new car was not perfect though. I think it may have had a hard life with it's first owner. I believe it had covered it's first 58,400 miles in only 23 months! A few things did not work correctly, or at all. The rain sensor did not work and so you had no intermittent wipers unless you turned off the rain sensor in the Infotainment settings. But the most annoying was that the driver's temperature controls sometimes had a mind of their own. More specifically, usually on a really hot weather day, you'd set off in the car and you'd see the driver's set temperature go up and up without you touching anything! You would frantically try to turn it down and almost instantly, it would be turned back up again. Fortunately, a quick Google revealed these were common issues and I got them fixed under warranty.
So, just over 1 month of ownership and about 1,000 miles driven, I think I've got all the problems sorted and I am very happy with it.
