BERLIN (AP) -- Volkswagen said Friday it is recalling some 290,000 diesel vehicles
worldwide to carry out checks on their fuel pumps. 

The automaker said it was contacting owners of vehicles with three- or four-cylinder
diesel engines that were built between March and August of this year. The recall
affects the Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda brands, the company said. 

Volkswagen said a defect during the manufacturing process of a bolt on the cover of
the fuel pump could, "in isolated cases," lead to the bolt breaking - possibly
resulting in a leakage of diesel fuel. 

The company said that some 290,000 vehicles were affected worldwide, about 90,000
of them in Germany

On some vehicles with 3 and 4 cylinder pump injector engines of the above chassis 
number ranges, the bolt of the tandem fuel pump cover may break due to a bolt 
production fault. As a result, the pump housing is no longer tight and diesel may 
leak. 
Remedy 
A check with the DIALOG, HOLZ, DOSYS or FISH system must be carried out 
before repair to establish whether the vehicle of the above chassis number 
range is affected by this campaign. 

Also: 
Check whether a tandem pump of the manufacturer Bosch or 
LUK has been fitted and make an entry in the service 
schedule.
