Hi Janice,

Glad to hear you enjoyed reading about my VW Golf.

I can certainly recommend a Golf 1.9 TDI SE (105BHP). I have always found
mine to be surprisingly large (either with the rear seats up or down) and
comfortable inside.

I think your Polo 1.4 TDI SE is probably one of the most efficient diesel
cars around and so the Golf is probably going to use a bit more fuel but
it's certainly not a fuel guzzler.

I hope this answers your query. If you need any further advice, let me know.

hi stuart,

thanks for taking the time to reply to me...really
appreciate it.i thort i read somewhere the 1.9 was quite economical.my
polo has 29,000miles on clock, the golf i'm looking at has 54,000miles
on clock, having to put money to for trade in,damn dealer lol. altho
golfs are dearer i know.just wondering if 54,000 miles is ok or too
much, bearing in mind i wont be in a position to ever get another

Hi Janice,

The 1.9 TDI is certainly economical. It's definitely the most economical
engine they fit to Golfs. You can get over 60 MPG on a steady long distance
run. Lots of short runs from cold and you'll be looking at nearer 40 MPG.

54,000 miles is not a lot for a 6 year old diesel engine car. That shouldn't
put you off. But I recommend you check out its service history. The handbook
containing the service booklet should be in a slot in the top of the glove
box. Make sure the service booklet is up-to-date.

hi stuart,
sorry to bother you again,do you know if these cars came
with fog lights in the front bumper, the 1 i'm about to buy has.it also
says 2.0 tdi on the tail gate, dealer hpi checked it,and it is a 1.9.am
a little bit dubious of buying it when it arrives. (it went to a
different branch by mistake,so still waiting for it) am wondering if
it's been modified or did the fogs come as optional extras.the 1 am
looking at is on the arnold clark site.not sure what to do for
insurance purposes.have looked all over the internet and can only find
the golf plus with fogs in the front bumper....thanks jan.

Hi Jan,

The early Golf SE's did not come with fog lights as standard. They could however be added as optional extras when ordering from new. Adding the original fog lights to a car which didn't originally have them is also a popular after market addition. A previous owner, keen to make his 1.9 TDI look like the more expensive (and powerful) 2.0 GT TDI (which did come with fog lights) might have added the fog lights and stuck the 2.0 TDI badge on the back!

It's very important that you find out exactly what engine your car has. When you give your car's registration to your insurance company, they will only insure it for the engine size they have. If they say it really is a 2.0 TDI your insurance group will double!

Why not use an internet website to get a quote for the new car. Do you know the reg number? These sites let you enter the reg number and they will tell you what car it relates to.

Hope that helps,
Stuart
