Water in tail light cluster

Hi Stuart,

Hope your keeping well.
Just writing to warn you of an issue we had with the Golf.
I noticed that one of the back light's was filling up with water and the enclosure was steaming up each day. When I looked into it, the plastic nuts that hold it on the car were only hand tight when compared to the other side. I think someone had changed a bulb and not fixed it back on properly.
Because it is double skinned, it took two days to dry out indoors by a radiator!
Seems ok now though. 8o)

I was also going to mention the indicators. I notice that when you start the car with an indicator on, the seatbelt alarm goes "ding ding ding" and the lights flash as normal, BUT the "tick tick" of the indicator doesn't make any noise until the seatbelt noise has finished. Do you think the "tick tick" noise is a sound effect, rather than a relay? (like the old days)
(I know I'm sad, but I like to find out these things) LOL

take care,
Alex.

Hi Alex,

Nice to hear from you.

Thanks for the heads-up regarding water getting into the rear lights. I'll check my car the next time I'm working in the area.

You are right about the indicator sound. I believe all the dash sounds are generated electronically via. That would explain why you only get one sound at a time.

Surely by now you realise that cars have moved on quite a bit from "the old days"? Certainly these Mk V golfs have. Drive by wire throttle, CAN network control system, auto lights, auto wipers, ESP and on and on. I think my first car (a 1978 Ford Escort - http://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/cars/previouscars.php) probably had a single microprocessor in it (and that was in the radio cassette I fitted). I wouldn't like to guess how many are in the Mk V golf!

Keep enjoying the Mk V
Stuart
