Weired whine
Posted by private, Fri 13 Jan 2006 12:08 am
Hi Stuart, I purchased a new Golf V with the same engine and spec as yours 2 months ago. On the whole I am very pleased with the car apart from one annoying characterstic that I was wondering was present on your car. Basically when driving round town at lowish speeds and between 1000 & 2000 revs a weired whine is audible. The sound is very much like that of an owl. The dealer has told me that this is normal engine noise & is a "characterstic" of the engine. Any thoughts on this? By the way, great website. The Golf section is a great resource. Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy,
I have never personally heard this owl-like noise in my own car. However I
have read about other owners hearding such a noise on the UK MkIVs MK5
internet forum at
http://www.uk-mkvs.net/forums/default.aspx?ForumGroupID=16
From memory I don't think there has been a definite answer whether this is
indeed a characteristic or a problem of some sort (perhaps related to the
turbo). I recommend you browse the posts on the forum. I think this has been
discussed during the past week and so you should find the post quite
quickly.
Sorry I can't be more helpful on this but glad to hear you find my website
useful,
Stuart

Hi Stuart,
Thanks for your response. It was me that started the last "owl noise" thread. Anyway it would appear that the noise is just a "characterstic" affecting some TDI's. I have posted another thread relating to production location that you may find of interest.
Regards,
Andy
