I found it strange too that VW claim normal oil consumption to be as much as a litre per 1000 kms (they certainly do in the Golf Mk2 manual). I have read that long motorway journeys, towing and hill climbing use more oil as it gets hotter. It only happened to us once after a 200 mile round trip and has been normal between services ever since and the solution was a one litre top up.
