Rear Door lock, window and MFD (for door status) not working

Hi Stuart,
Thoroughly enjoy reading through your extremely interesting and useful website. I also have a Mk5 (in the same colour!) and although not having done as many miles as you have still experienced the odd hiccup.
I replaced a front passenger lock last year that had failed (thanks for your useful advice and post on that). I now have a new problem with the rear driver side door but this time the problem seems different. The door won't lock at all, stays open all the time (with the previous broken lock it was the opposite, it was staying locked all the time). Also I have noticed that the MFD showing the picture of the car with open/closed doors shows the rear door as closed all the time even when open. Also the electric window on that door does not work either. When I use the remote to lock/unlock the car I cannot hear any attempt by that lock to do anything.
I have checked the wiring in the door, where it opens and closes (after reading your issues with the boot wiring) and the wiring looks fine.
Do you have any ideas what the problem might be? If it is the lock then could it also interfere with the window? That is what is confusing me.
Many thanks for any advice you can give,
Thanks,
Bob

When two or more separate components fail at the same time I usually suspect the wiring rather than the components themselves. But you say you have checked the wiring and all appears ok. Did you also check the condition of any earthing points? If so, the only thing I can suggest is to check if any fault codes have been logged. These usually highlight any component failures and/or wiring faults.
Thanks for your kind words about my web site,
Stuart

One of my car's rear doors recently wouldn't lock after about a year of not unlocking with the other doors. I changed the door lock module (£21 from eBay) and that fixed it. See http://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk5/rear_drivers_door_lock_replacement
