Cruise Control Fault

Hi, just seen your post about the VW Golf cruise control, interesting and very useful. However, my problem is that you have to press the rocker switch on the end of the stalk very hard to engage cruise. This was ok when I first got the car (at 19500 miles), it's now done 134000, it appears the microswitch (tactile switch) is worn out. Any idea as to where I might get a new one? If I do manage to get one, do you think it would be safe to just de-solder the old one and fit a new one (I do have a very fine soldering iron and solder sucker), if so, should the battery be disconnected first? Thanks, Billy

Hi Billy,
Thanks for letting me know that you found my website useful.
Do you mean where can I get replacement micro-switches or a replacement cruise control circuit board? I don't think VW will be able to sell you anything except a brand new stalk (£120+).
If you do manage to find a replacement part, I'm pretty sure it would work if connected up properly. I would be tempted to either remove the appropriate fuse or battery connection before starting any work though - just in case.
Hope that works. Let me know how you get on, Stuart

Hi Stuart,
Thank s for a very quick reply.
I mean the actual micro switches. Think I need to positively identify the actual tactile switch, then try RS or Maplins.
Will let you know how I get on.
Cheers,
Billy

Hi Simon,
This photo shows the micro-switches activated by the rocker switch quite clearly (blue body & yellow buttons in a metal mount): http://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk5/intermittent_cruise_control/Img_1140.jpg. I'm not an electronics expert and so I don't know how hard replacements would be to source and fit. If you manage it and are happy I'd like to know where you got replacements and the cost so I can post the info on my website.
Hope that helps,
Stuart
