Automatic Tailgate

Hello

I have a query which hopefully you can provide guidance on. I have looked into retro fitting an automatic tailgate function onto my 54 mk5 Golf 1.4. However I have made modifications to the gas struts which when I push in the tailgate badge opens the locking mechanism which effortlessly raises the boot. I am aware that some mk5's have the ability when hooked up to VAGCOM can be programmed to allow the key fob to unlock the tailgate mechanism. Right now my key fob 3rd button unlocks the boot but not the mechanism itself. Do you know if an early mk5 has the capability through vagcom for the key to unlock the mechanism and if so where within the VCDS is this and can you recommend where I'd be able to source the coding?

Thanks do your assistance in advance and apologies if this is the wrong manner in which to post.

I believe all Mk 5's (sold in the UK anyway) come with a 3 button key fob, the middle button of which unlocks just the rear hatch. However, this does not also "pop" the latch which is what happens when you rotate the VW badge and which I believe it what you are looking for. Maybe this is a safety feature?

I have not heard of anyone acheiving what you propose but it sounds like something which might be popular in the US. Have you tried searching the US VW/Rabbit forums?

Hope that helps,
Stuart

Yeah I have been on the forums an managed to find some info as to where the key lays within vagcom. I'm due to take the car to my vagcom contact and if it works 'll post the mods and the vagcom details for anyone interested.

Hi just an update re automatic tailgate function.
The system I implemented was to

1: open boot
2: remove the retaining clip on each strut with a screwdriver.
(Use a brush shaft to prop the tailgate open)
3: pop the strut off the ball pin then remove the end cap on the thin end which allows access to strut.
4: slide a spring and 2x washers onto the strut.
(I bought springs off eBay, I typed in "automatic boot mk5 golf". They were green in colour)
5: re attach the end caps and reattach them to the ball pins and then reattach the retaining clips.
6: use black insulating tape and wind it around the springs lowest coil tightly to stop the spring sliding up and down the strut when open.
7: open VCDS
8: go to module 46 - central convenience - long coding helper
9: go to byte 2 and check box on bit 3, some CCM's require byte 4, bit 1
10: modification complete

Sounds like a relatively simple mod. Thanks for sharing the details.
