Wiring loom

Yes, I have a mkV '05 plate Golf with the exact same problem. Dealer not interested, agreed a problem but claim they do not do many. At 296 GBP I am not surprised.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for contacting me.

Unfortunately this does appear to be a common problem on older Mk V Golf's. Whether or not your dealer has had to repair many is immaterial. Do other car's wiring looms snap when they approach 10 years old? This is a design fault and I am disappointed with Volkswagen for not dealing with this issue better.

296 GBP sounds about the right for having a new wiring loom fitted. If I was you I'd try again with your VW dealer and if that fails write a letter the VW HQ. You, like me might only have to pay 50%. Failing that, some people have been able to extend and reconnect the snapped wires themselves. It might be a bit fiddly but shouldn't be too difficult.

Let me know if I can help further,
Stuart

Hi Stuart,
No joy with VW HQ, basically because of age and no service history with VW.
They would not accept that this is a common problem. People are entitled to
write what they like on the internet seems to be the standard reply.
Anyhow, my local mechanic has done a superb job and extended and repaired
the wires, I had a go at it but did not have the patience. He has done
loads, he told me.
Thanks for your interest in this matter.
Kind regards
Mark
