Cold start rough running
Posted by private, Tue 16 Dec 2014 5:08 am
Around June this year I noticed that I faced a problem with my car, particularly on a cold start. The car cranks & starts fine but for the initial several minutes it does not run smoothly- when I accelerate there are flat spots and the car jerks as though the engine is about to shut down.
On the advice of my mechanic I recently fitted 4 x new injector nozzles which did not cleare the problem. Again on his advice I purchased a new High Pressure Pump but when he fitted it last week he said that the problem has still not cleared, quote " replaced the pump and the car started misbehaving i.e. idling was erratic, so we had to fit back the old pump; also checked the vacuum lines and all are fine. The pump seems to be faulty".
I purchased a new pump from the VW Dealer in South Africa so I doubt that it is faulty.
My mechanic is now also telling me that the car requires a new throttle body; not sure why and if this is related to the problem.
Can you please advise as I am at a loss what to do!
Many thanks & regards,
Shaun

Hi Shaun,
Sorry to hear that you are having problems with your VW. I have to admit to not hearing of this problem before.
Have you or your mechanic checked to see if any fault codes are logged. With the kind of symptoms you describe I'd be surprised if nothing has been logged. Particularly with the throttle body - is this the throttle pedal body? If so this is purely an electronic switch and if that is at fault I'm sure a fault code would have been logged.
Sorry I cannot be more help. Please let me know how you get on, Stuart

Dear Stuart,
My mechanic has just written back saying the fault logged was " fuel pressure leak"
Does this help?
Regards,
Shaun

Hi Shaun,
"Fuel Pressure Leak" doesn't mean much to me but at least it is a start.
You've been changing injector nozzles and the high pressure pump so I guess this confirms that you are looking in the right area. I've just typed "Volkswagen golf mk5 Fuel pressure leak" into Google and it returned plenty of results. Maybe take a look?
Sorry I can't be more help,
Stuart
