Repair economically viable?

Hi, always looking at your site for information etc, must be the best vw golf mk5 site available. I have a 2005 mk5 1.9 tdi, and it is now needing a new cambelt etc, and possibly a complete new clutch, dmf etc. With the low value of the car now, due to its age, would your opinion justify the cost, which I estimate to be around £900. I would love to keep the car, but would I be "wasting my money" on an oldish car. your opinion much valued. best wishes Brian.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your kind words about my website.
I am not sure about DMFs but cam-belts and clutches do not last forever and will eventually need replacing. Cam-belts should be replaced at least every 4 years but clutches can last 10+ years depending upon how you drive. If the rest of the car is in good condition and you plan on keeping it, then I wouldn't write it off just yet.
Hope that helps,
Stuart

Hi Stuart, I asked your opinion about my clutch etc, and I have just had the clutch and dmf replaced with all the appropriate bits at a local german car specialist and he said all the parts were on their way out, and he showed me the old parts that were definatley well used. It has made a lot of difference. the bill came to £613. all in, seems not a bad price. Just the cambelt and water pump etc. to do now, quote of £247 all in, so Im happy at the moment. Thanks for your interest, Best Wishes Brian.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your email and letting me know how you got on. £247 is a good price for cambelt and water pump.
