Golf GTI Mk5 2006 DSG gearbox problem
Posted by private, Fri 6 Nov 2015 6:46 am
Hi Mr. Dalby,
My name is Hardeep, I got you email address from a friend of mine, Shaun, he told me you helped him out with his golf mk5 and it would be worth my while getting in touch with you over a few issues with my car.
I have golf gti mk5 2006, and I have been having some issues, it has a DSG gearbox. When I want to accelerate quickly from a standing start, I get a lot of wheel judder, and the whole car shakes and my check engine light comes on. If I let the car role and then press the accelerator it runs fine, no matter if I just touch the accelerator or put my foot down. I did some research on the net, and I changed the cam follower, the engine mounts, including the dog bone, changed all the spark plugs and ignition coils, I also changed the oxygen sensor pre-cat, I have changed the evap canister as well. I still get the judder and the check engine light. I swapped out the air filter box and put in a K&N typhoon filter kit, with a new MAF sensor and its made no difference. As of last check with the computer the error codes were 00665 turbo/super charger under boost and 01089 EVAP emission.
Any help or ideas you can think of would be greatly appreciated as I have run out of ideas.
Many thanks
Hardeep

Hi Hardeep,
I don’t have much experience of the DSG gearbox but from your description is sounds like this might be the cause of your car’s problems. You say the car is fine once rolling so it sounds like it might be a clutch problem which only occurs when under the clutch is under the most load – starting from a standstill.
My Mk V has a manual gearbox and I suspect it is totally different to a DSG but it too has a slight judder when starting from a standstill – particularly when the engine is cold and the weather conditions are wet/damp. It’s not as severe as the juddering you describe though.
You mention the fault codes and none of them jump out to me as suggesting a fault to the DSG but that’s what springs to my mind.
Hope this is useful,
Stuart

Hi Stuart,
Many thanks for your reply, I was leaning to the clutch side, but hoping that wasn't the problem. Do you know if there is anyway of checking the gearbox and having a sure decision? I had a look at the price of the clutch plates, quite expensive.
Will let you know what we find and what the fix is.
Many thanks
Hardeep

Sorry Hardeep,
I have little experience of the DSG gearboxes and clutches. I hear that they are great when they are working but can be expensive when things go wrong. Hopefully you will be able to find someone who can help you out further. Good luck,
Stuart

Hi Stuart,
Many thanks for the reply, I will do some more research into it, but by the looks of things, the net says to try a readaptation of the gearbox, and if that doesn’t sort it, got ot start looing for some clutch plates…I will keep you posted on what I find when I find it.
Many thanks

Hi Stuart,
How are you? Happy New Year, hope you had a good Christmas and new year. I just wanted to let you know what I found on my GTI, I had written to you earlier, I found that the inner drive shaft cv joints had worn out, on the gearbox side, to a point where the cage was just playing inside freely, but there was no noise or anything, the outer joints were ok, hence no rattling or noise when I turned the wheel either direction. Was quite interesting, and the only way I spotted it, was when we jacked the car up, and saw one of the outer boots had torn, but still had plenty of grease in it. Decided to remove the drive shaft and service both sides.
Anyway I thought would just let you know, for your knowledge as well.
Many thanks, and hope you have a great 2016.

Hi Hardeep,
Happy New Year to you also.
Thanks for sharing your findings. I’ve not heard of this problem before. I think you have been unlucky – I don’t think it is a common problem. Congratulations on fixing it yourself.
