Intake Manifold

Hey i found your posts on the Vw really useful. I own a 2004 MK5 1.9 TDI S 105BHP and i was wondering if you have ever done any work on the Intake Manifold IE cleaning it. As recently i had an engine check light on, i Diagnose it to be a faulty EGR which i managed to get out and clean with some Forte air intake cleaner and that fixed the problem but while i was at it i could not believe the amount of gunk in the EGR and intake manifold i managed to clean some of the intake manifold out. Have you ever removed yours just wondering id its a big job? Do you think it would be worth getting it cleaned out.. The only major repairs i have done on my car since new is a new radiator, new timing belt at 90K, new Clutch and DMF at 150K and its now at 160K and still going.

Hi,

Glad to hear that you find my VW Golf info useful.

I have never done any work on my car's intake manifold personally; I've never needed to!

When the car was about 18 months old the engine management warning light came on and that turned out to be the intake manifold flap needing replacing. See http://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk5/vwgolfmk5_wearandtear.php#inletmanifoldflap

I have no idea what state the intake manifold and EGR are in. I drive my Mk V fairly sedately and normally use supermarket fuel so I do purposefully try to give the engine a blow out when I can (say, once a month). This involves finding a steepish hill with a 70mph speed limit and flooring the accerelator in 2nd gear. When I hit the rev limiter I change into 3rd. When I reach the speed limit I stop. By this point, there's normally a plume of smoke behind me. I think this helps dislodge a lot of soot in the exhaust system and hopefully helps keep the fuel/air intake side of the engine free of rubbish also. As my car is over 8 years old now and has got nearly 140,000 miles on the clock, maybe this is working. Or maybe it can handle gunk in the intake manifold. I'm not going to consider trying to clean it unless something starts going wrong.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions,
Stuart
