Cooling fan comes on at full speed

Hi Stuart,

I hope this finds you keeping well.

Over the last 5 months my VW Golf Mark V has been facing a problem on start-up(particularly in the morning when the engine is cold or during the day when the engine has cooled down) whereby on initial crank the engine starts without any difficulty but the cooling fan comes on at full speed. I immediately switch off and when I restart then the fan does not come on again.

Can you please advise what the problem may be?

Thanking you in advance.

Kind regards,

Shaun

Hi Shaun,

Life is good here! My Golf is being very well behaved and not requiring much attention. It turns 10 years old in June.

It sounds like your car has a problem with the fan control circuitry. The fans in Mk Vs appear to fail or misbehave in a few different ways. I had a similar problem with one of the fans on my car a few years back. See http://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk5/vwgolfmk5_wearandtear.php#small_cooling_fan_replaced

I'd get your car checked for any fault codes being logged. Some faults with the cooling fans do NOT trigger a fault code but it would be wise to check for other faults before getting either one or both of the cooling fans replaced.

Hope that helps,
Stuart

I managed to sort out the problem with the fan, thanks.
